01 — Overview

God who rejoices

Yeyazel is the fortieth of the seventy-two angels of the Shem HaMephorash, the sequence of divine names drawn from three verses of Exodus 14. Within the sefirotic scheme he stands among the Powers, the choir seated in Geburah — the sphere of severity, judgment, and the force that clears away what has overstayed its welcome.

What distinguishes Yeyazel within that stern company is his particular office: consolation. Where Geburah cuts, Yeyazel tends the wound left behind. He is invoked against the states that imprison a person from the inside — grief that won't lift, dependency, the tightening grip of despair — and against literal captivity as well. Several sources name him a liberator of prisoners in the plain sense of the word.

His name is most often rendered "God who rejoices" or "the God who delights every living thing," and that duality — severity's household producing a name about delight — is worth sitting with rather than resolving. It is the same paradox found in the tarot correspondence assigned to his decan: the Three of Swords, sorrow itself, from which he is said to draw out meaning rather than denial.

"He instills the courage to take the first steps toward new horizons — not by removing the weight, but by making it bearable."

What Yeyazel governs

Three threads run through the historical material on Yeyazel — each a different register of the same underlying office: release.

א

Consolation

Comfort in grief, relief after strain, and a way through emotional states that feel like a kind of imprisonment — anxiety, dependency, despair. Yeyazel is asked to temper intensity without dulling it.

ב

Liberation

Freedom from literal confinement and from oppression more broadly — several sources describe him plainly as a deliverer of prisoners and those held under harsh authority.

ג

The written word

Governance over printing, publishing, records, and broadcast media — everything born from the impulse to preserve a thought and pass it on. Writers and artists are named among his particular charges.

Governing archangel

Camael

Archangel of Geburah, under whose authority Yeyazel and the other Powers of that sphere are traditionally placed.

Cross-system note

Raum

Some later syncretic pairings of the Shem HaMephorash with the Goetia associate Yeyazel with the demon Raum. This linkage belongs to a specific 19th–20th century correspondence tradition rather than the older Kabbalistic sources — included here for completeness, not as settled doctrine.

A note on sources. The Shem HaMephorash tradition has circulated for centuries across Hebrew, Latin, and French sources, and spellings, degree ranges, and minor attributions vary between them — Yeyazel appears as Yeiazel, Ieiazel, and (in at least one Golden Dawn glossary) is placed instead in a quinance of Aquarius rather than Libra, likely reflecting a different attribution system than the Shem HaMephorash proper. This page follows the reading corroborated across the majority of angelological references: 40th Name, Powers, Geburah, Libra 15°–20°. No claim is made to a single authoritative version.
